I started with the 1st edition about 10 years ago. It's been my favorite reference for a long time. It took a long time for the 2nd and 3rd editions to come out (but, they were close together).

One of the best features is, it shows which versions of which browsers support each feature of HTML, CSS, and Javascript (now ECMAscript). It is very comprehensive.

I don't do much front-end work any more but, I still keep a copy around. I've probably given away at least 10 copies of the book over the years to various co-workers.

If you want to learn online then I would prefer www.w3schools.com and if you want a Book then try out TMH publication books.

Once you get past the HTML and into the extended languages, look at Larry Ullman's Books.

Unfortunately, I don't see that he has done an HTML book.

I have used both his PHP and his MYSQL books.

He simplifies and explains far better than almost anything else I have ever seen.
