The best way to memorize text elements?

I have this feeling I'm not going about this the best way.

I'm trying to memorize the markup language simply by reading, as if I'm memorizing the material for a quiz. It can be overwhelming, since there is so much.

Do you try to directly memorize markup language? Or do you simply reference as you need it?

The best way to memorize is to USE it, over and over, over. Hand code it, don't rely on WYSIWYG editors. You will quickly learn the most common tags easily - headings, paragraphs, divs, links along with things like bold/strong, italics/emphasis etc. Keep the HTML reference handy for other things that you may not use as often, such as forms and other things, and you will eventually need the HTML reference less and less.

Everyone has their own learning style, but usually DOING cements it in your memory a lot better than just reading and memorization.

If you use the Internet as your cheat-sheet, you will be ok, but plan on using the 'net as your cheat-sheet for many years if you plan on doing it professionally, or at least on a serious level.

I agree, typing out each line and you will learn common structure and tags very quickly. For those more forgettable ones I like to keep these handy, they have a set of downloadable very handy reference sheets.

I've been been writing quite a lot since yesterday, and I'm definately retaining the most simply by 'doing'. Thanks for the tips.

Those cheat-sheets are golden. TY.

A fun way to test your skills is with the W3 schools HTML quiz (which has finally been brought up to modern day standards);

I have to agree with LadyNRed, actually sitting down and doing it is the way to go. Apart from actually learning to write HTML (and CSS) as you go it will also allow you to make errors and correct them. I always find it's the fixing of errors that teaches me the most!
