For the record:
I downloaded the entire site and recreated the cache.
Went thru the library and tried to delete each item. If it says do you really want to delete, I deleted it. If it said This item has links to.. I kept it. Since this is and old site with many reworkings, there were quite a few unused library items, and eliminating them would make the job simple.
Next I opened all the templates, 2 in this case. Deleted each library and reinserted it. After the templates were renewed I updated the templates for the entire site.
There were a few library items left. I tried to delete them one at a time, and the alert box gave me the files in which each was used. Then I opened each of these pages, and re-inserted the library items.
The site seems fine. I think I did the repair completely.
You probably could have done the same mapping using other functions like "check links sitewide", but then, there is always a better way I didn't think of.
If some other poor soul needs this: following is some search engine fodder.
