hi, just a useless newbie question.

does anybody know of a good program, if anything exists or advice on what to do other than a fresh build for converting a website created for larger screen resolutions to be better viewable in other screens? for example, i'm working on a website that i'm so far into now that i really dont want to start over but forgot that i'm developing it on a laptop with a 15" screen 1280x800 resolution and it looks fine but am afraid its really going to look like a scrolling nightmare on lower resolutions such as 800x600 etc.

thanks

Nope. YOU are the "convertor". The idea is you build your pages either as fixed width layout or as a "fluid" layout

thanks for your reply.

thats what i thought. would it be safe to just change my resolution to 800x600 and build the site to be more user web friendly or is there other variables to consider when designing a basic html website?

Design for your target audience. If your audience are likely to be using rather old hardware or may have eyesight problems then 800x600 could be a good starting point.

If your intended audience are cutting edge techy users then a minimum of 1280w will be ok.

Most of the people use 1280+ resolution these days. there are hardly any poor soul left using 800 ones.

think you would be on safe side pretty much doing it for 1280.

Personally, I split the difference. I code for 1024 x 768 but I "try" to use flexible layouts where possible so things shift. Not always possible though.

Especially when using fixed width graphics within the layout.

800 x 600 is pretty much dead.

Don't judge everybody by yourself or web/graphic designers or gamer standards.

I run at 1280x800 on one monitor and 1440x900 on the other, but I know very many people who run at 1024 on new hardware because they need to, due to their eyesight and that includes many people under 30 years old.

Personally, I wish the technology would come up with some other standard than designing everything by pixel widths.

Seriously, I use a 22" monitor someone got me for Christmas, but I only use 19 inches of it because using the recommended resolution on the full 22" made things so **** small I needed a magnifying glass. They eye strain was horrific.

19" inch monitors were perfect for a desktop. Anything bigger is asking for eye trouble.

My opinion is do not worry too much about 800 x 600 because not many people use that resolution now (depending on your niche). If your main audience is tech savvy they will likely have newer computers and vice versa.

I design at 990w so that a website can fit comfortably on a 1024x768 screen. I no longer worry about the nearly obsolete 800w.
