The images in my portfolio are currently 700x467, JPEG quality 12, at 120ppi.

File size between 300kb and 500 kb.

There are 20 images in my portfolio.

Do you think these images are too large, take too long to load?

What's a good file size for web portfolio?

Should I add more compression, reduce the images size, or both?

Thanks for your input.

Personally, I try not to exceed 100K page size. A smaller file size is beneficial to your users because it will result in a faster download speed, which is always a good thing.

You don't need to put all 20 photos on the Internet. Put your best 6, two per page
on a three page load. Run them through your optimizer on your photo software.
Upload them as Optimized Jpgs. 7% optimization works well without killing too much quality.

You can do two 3x5 side by side or top bottom with nice titles and descriptions.

Make sure to watermark across them so some jerk can't steal them.

Actually, most photographers have more than 20 images on the web. 20 is already quite conservative. Some have about 100. Especially when you're in portraiture, you need a lot of samples.

I, personally, would have smaller images and give the option to expand them. Given the fact that monitors are becoming larger and larger as time passes, having the option to view images that are 1,000+ pixels wide might be good.

I think you need to use some of the scripts like the "lightbox".
In this case, you will have a small image, and when clicked it will open the image in a good size. Also it may have different effects at the opening of a new layer.

First off I don't know what a jpg quality 12 is. That is an arbitrary number from some software package.

700/467 is a nice size for a big picture.
You should be able to do a nice quality web image at 50-75KB
More that 72 dpi is wasted for web viewing.
You need to fully understand web quality images.

I won't post a live link since this is self promoting but read this page: imagegenie.net/Web-Photography/Compression-Ratios-and-Image-Quality.php
