[split from http://www.webmaster-talk.com/html-f...ou-really.html ]

There are a lot of illusions about what search engines give priority to and what gets you better placement.

For instance, how many times have we heard that it takes months to get a site into Google. It's never taken me more than a week.

I run a totally obscure site called genealogyland.com that has higer page ranking because of two things.

1. A Dead Celebrities list that can sometimes get thousands of hits a day
depending on who dies.

2. A new blog that hundreds of people have visited in the last few days.

Neither has anything to do with how I coded those pages. It all has to do with content and user activity. In fact, the dead celebrities page is one giant TABLE.
I am re-designing it for 2010 so i can include more ads, but it would have too much retrofit to do it for 2009. I considered databasing it but I have since blown off that idea. I want the content static so the bots find ALL the content ALL the time.

As for my old school teachers, I came from a pretty pathetic school system that believed far more in Athletics than Academics and it still does, some thirty years later. Academics was never my forte, but I have been writing for publication since age 15. (My First Byline) I've been writing for 34 years now in five different states and dozens of different publications. Plus the content of dozens of web sites over the last 20 years.

You have a few misconceptions there.

It doesn't take months to "get into Google". I have had pages indexed within minutes of putting them live (no silly things needed such as site maps, pinging, "social media" spamming etc)
With highly competitive areas it does take work of course.

CSS vs Tables for SEs is just rubbish there is absolutely no difference at all.

Crawling content stored in a database is no different to crawling content stored as text files on a hard drive.
It is all served out as "static" HTML regardless, and is all available ALL the time. I'm not quite sure where the idea that database content is somehow "unavailable" to crawlers. Because as long as there are links to the pages they will be crawled and indexed in exactly the same way that "static" pages will be crawled and indexed.

Having a database driven site does however make it much simpler to generate content in different forms.
XML feeds (RSS) can be easily generated, feeding the content out to different templates for accessibility purposes or to mobile devices.
With "static" pages it would require each content form to be created and updated manually.

Essentially the page is a never ending list. All entries are updated and entered
one at a time based on an entry code template I simply copy and paste and change the content for. Occassionally I add some editors comments which is done with a simple add of a paragraph.

My revision for 2010 will be to redesign the base to allow for more ads.
Even that revision will be relatively simple.

I don't want an RSS feed. I want them to visit the site.

Now that page IS an example of what tables are (or should be) used for.

AND a great example of how a database could create more benefits to users and give you more advertising space at the same time.
