I could use a little advice...

Hello,

I've created a website for a client. The website is now done and complete and on the web, but he would like to be able to go in himself and edit it sometime later on...

I was wondering what would be the best way to have someone without any coding experience at all to be able to edit HTML?

He does not have dreamweaver, or any interest in purchasing it.

I was thinking about setting up a CMS for the website, but it looks like it's going to be a PITA to do for this kind of site that I have created.

I think what I might do, is download Komposer myself, write out some instructions on how to edit html, and then how to upload the files to the site using an ftp program like filezilla.

Does that sound like a logical route?

He could always just edit the files using notepad as well I guess if I just wrote out some specific instructions...

any advice?

Thanks

Too bad you didn't create the site in Wordpress ...

Well, yeah, I thought of that originally, but it's kind of a complex layout that wouldn't work in a customized wordpress theme very well.

I've still not ruled out the option, but it could be more trouble than what it's worth. All he wants to do is edit upcoming events to certain pages periodically.

If that's all he needs to do you should be able to call the upcoming events section via a php include and make it a text file that could be edited using his web hosting control panel file editor.

Or you could write him a PHP front end that would edit the text file in a very simple database. Then use an include to put it on the page.

ooo that would be cool, except I don't know to get that done in php as I have limited experience with it.

I'm still thinking this "komposer" option is the easiest for everyone, but am still widely open to suggestion.

That's why I suggested using a plain text file

I would definitely say use a CMS maybe Joomla or Droople. I dont know if I would give someone free reign of the sites files and code if they have no experience with it and especially if they dont have an editor such as Dreamweaver. It could be disastrous. Id check out Joomla's extensions and template to see if it can handle the type of site that youve built.

*sigh* well, a cms would be good, but I mean I think it would be a lot of effort for the kind of site that I've built. The site I made has 50+ pages (all with very light content)

Here is the URL for it: http://www.modenafinefoods.com

I've checked out Komposer and it works the way I would want where it's easy to see any front-end edits for adding new text and creating links (which is all he pretty much needs to do), and then just update the file on the web using filezilla. I have the entire site backed up, so if anything goes wonky I can restore it and I can instruct him not to touch the .css file at all.

I dunno.

Edit: thanks for eveyone's input so far.

Komposer is outdated and adds way to much garbage code. If you want a 21st century fix, use a CMS that has support for cloud computing. Microsoft and others are shoving that down everyone's throat now.

Can't you convince the client they would be better off letting you update their site?
