Using images for a website is something you'll get used to. PNG's are nice because they allow transparency when you need to place something over a background image of some sort, but they really can't be optimized like a jpg can. A 100k png can look almost equal(or good enough for presentation) and only be 20k as a jpg.
There are times when png is god for logos and such, but imo, I try to avoid the larger images as png's.
My personal rules are:
1. Use png when I NEED clean edged transparency. (But don't forget a conditional fix for ie6 to handle png transparency)
2. Use jpg for most everything well optimized exported at the correct width and height to be used.
3. Use gif for images that don't rely on gradients, or a multitude of different colors.
