The bad thing is... If you don't have IE8 on your system, it doesn't have the function... :?

That is incorrect. If you are running WinXP and do not have at LEAST IE7 installed, then the IE8 part of IETester will not work.

but if you're a web designer/developer looking to test in ie then you're not going to have a very old IE6 anyway on your machine

Not necessarily.. I still have IE6 on my machine at home.. although it's getting dumped pretty soon!
