Hi all

I recently put daynut.com online and to start of with everything was working fine. Its especially the homepage sites that i had problems with - but at the end, all problems were gone and i thought i had a working site.

But now - 2 days later - suddenly the big menu-thing on the homepages doesent appear as it did when i uploaded it all just a few days ago. I am currently using Windows 7 and IE8 so maybe there is a problem with the doctype? (which i know nothing about). On my fathers Iphone and Mac-pro Safari it works perfectly just as it did on my computer - so why did it suddenly change??
Please take a look at http://www.daynut.com/Backgrounds/Sc...re/Nature.html and take a look. I used browsershots.com and saw that it appears very different on each browser type - but what can i do to change this?

I made the site entirely by first downloading a template and then doing lots of edits in dreamweaver which automatically set the doctype - can this be the problem?? I am no experienced at doing websites - i just put together things from the internet and try to make it work. So can you give me any advice on how to optimize it??

This is what it looks like in my browser:

But there should be no gap and the edges should not be cut in like it is on the right side.

This is how it looks on my fathers Mac also - and how it should look - and how it did look on my browser before something unexplainable happened.:

I am sorry about the english. Please do tell if something is not understandable.

Hello NewbieNhelp,

Hopefully I don't want to come across to harsh, the key here is to hand code, even at that you still could run across a few glitches in the coding. On your Nature's HTML page you have 57 errors and 20 warnings. If you go to the Validator it will describe what the errors are and perhaps you can start fixing the errors.

http://validator.w3.org/

Here's another link to help you, they mention how to get around some problems with the IE Browser, what not to use, what version of IE Browser something won't work, something will work, etc.

Hi Giselle and thank you for your reply! I was aware of the errors before the thread start - but i tried changing out the doctype which sometimes increased the number of errors and sometimes decreased to around 20 errors i think.

Do you think the doctype maybe be wrong - or do you think i should just start correcting the errors that is showed now? Do i risk that anything might change on the layout if i correct the errors?

It could be a combination of both, wrong Doctype. Personally I would fix the errors first, I have your page source up and the validators complaints as well. You are using deprecated attributes, have another link explaining the different Document Type Definitions.

I know you don't want to hear this, I wouldn't want to hear this myself because I went through this yesterday with files. One little change, one little character change could disrupt the layout, don't save the change, view the change without saving the file to see what the file looks like in the browser, or save the file with a different name.

If you are using Firefox for a browser this is pretty handy add on tool to have, HTML Tidy, gives a description of the errors and warnings with numbered lines.

Thank you for your help Giselle - i wil go and correct the errors and see what happens.

Last question - do you have any idea why the layout looked OK on my computer for the first couple of days, and then suddenly changed? I dont understand how that happened.

What I have seen over last couple of days is a perfect layout, nothing like the screenshots links you have supplied. Why the page changed in two days is a good question, although I have had some strange things happen also. The background picture changes which it's suppose to do.

I am going to give you another validator link, paste the url address in HTML, CSS and the XHTML, you will see the HTML and XHTML have the same identical errors. The CSS validates, no errors or warnings. If the document type was wrong the validator will mention the error with the document type right at the beginning. The attributes are the errors, you might have to go to a CSS file to hook onto your HTML file.
