We produce literature in Fulani dialects. It has special characters - b, d, n etc, which have extra hooks. We have found that
www.peeral.com
is displaying these characters correctly online, but I am not sure exactly how he is achieving this.
In his numerous Joomla style sheets, one font spec is
font-family: "Lucida Sans Unicode", "Lucida Grande", "Lucida Sans", Lucida, sans-serif;"
However, surprisingly the special characters are working for me although I do not have those fonts on my computer under those names - I only have Lucida Console (in four flavours - western, cyriliic, turkish and central european). Wiping out his lucida fonts, and indeed every single font family from every stylesheet he has, on the firefox css web-developers bar. makes no difference - the special characters still display nicely.
Furthermore, in the source code, these special unicode characters are showing up in their correct appearance, rather than as conventional characters whose appearance has been changed due to a font change. (In our off-line setup of characters, we have allocated letters that are not used in Fula, eg v, for our special characters) for our own font.
So I am wondering - how is
peeral.com achieving this, and how do you directly type into a webpage a unicode character like this?
Grateful thanks
Tony
