I thought it might be fun to see what ideas people had for HTML that aren't exactly being considered by the W3C, or just currently aren't read by web browsers in any way.

For example, I think a <noparse> element could be useful for displaying code, where any code contained inside this element is NOT parsed by the browser (<noparse>HTML Code</noparse>). This way people can post tutorials and such without having to resort to the special character codes of &lt; for the < sign, &gt; for the > sign, etc.

So if anyone had any ideas for new elements, post the tag, whether it's self closing or not, and the description of what it's purpose is.

If people also had ideas for new attributes or values, those sound interesting to hear too.

Isn't that what the <pre> tag does?

My suggestion would be:
<extend> </extend>

This would be a block level element like a div that expanded to the height of its parent container calculated height regardless of the amount of content it held. (For multi column layouts that had repeating backgrounds, etc.)

You still need to use &lt; and &gt; entities if you want them to show up as < and > inside a <pre> tag.

I guess that explains why I never came across problems when writing formatted code tutorials, ha!

Thought this thread would be more popular...

Anyway, Randy, all the <pre> element does is displays the text as you enter it in a fixed way, including the white-space.
