"IE6 users will get a message to upgrade their browsers." great for those at home but what about those whose computers are controlled by IT departments and the like?

Most of the Organizations have moved from IE6, since they know that IE6 is out-dated. If they haven't, then they are not serious about security. Clearly, the bad guys behind the drive-by sites are going after IE6.
Microsoft itself wants to eradicate IE6, so it is better for the users to upgrade or choose another browser like Firefox & Chrome.

i agree but my point is that you're sending a message to users who are at the mercy of their IT departments.

Honestly, IE6 users will NEED to update eventually. HTML, JavaScript, PHP, and every other language are still growing and mildly changing, and as they do, old browsers will start failing on even simple sites. I have a lot of virtual machines and one of them is Windows 98, which I gave an average amount of memory to match a real 98 machine. It's IE6 is really starting to fail. It locks up on a lot of modern websites because it simple cannot handle them. Things like Adobe Flash Player, Videos, Music, and even use of many images lock it up. And as more web apps come out with nice 3D graphics like Google Earth, it will barely be able to visit any website.

He would have died long before MS did not thwart the adoption of the company's XP is a bit & strange license structure and stability problems, consquently many companies have opted to remain with Win2K and therefore & frozen to IE6. Obviously no IT department in their right mind considered as having reasonable progress, but now that Windows 7 is proved to be an update to make viable businesses.

Obviously no IT department in their right minds considered Vista as a reasonable step forward, but now that Windows 7 is proven to be a viable upgrade companies are doing so.
