Hmm, do you mean that it doesn't help because the sidebar / other content updates so often? Even then, caching can be a huge help in my experience.

I think AJAX should be enough for that ..
look for codes thats make AJAX Load the Slide Picture when it turn come ..
I mean not load all Picture on load, but after the site is loaded .and the visitor start read it ..

Like everyone has said, you need to look at your image sized and optimise them. Maybe use another file format. You can download a tool for Firefox called Firebug which can give you useful tips on how to speed up your site.

You need to install Google Page Speed addon to get tips how to speed up your website.

If you have no clue of what you are talking about then you better say nothing.

Aside from all the inputs you have got from the peers, my suggestion is that you should get a decent computer. Sometimes it's your own computer's browser slowness especially if it's firefox.

try compressing the images... Also check other components and images on your site to see if they can be compressed some.

If you are using data base as backend of your site then indexing of data base content is very important and try to have images with low weight i mean in mb if your site has videos it can be in flv format and more over band width of your server

You will have to think about reducing the size of those images to have your site load faster
