Ohhhh.. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!
Annoying music when you land on a website is the first thing that will make me LEAVE!! Keep in mind that people are listening to their OWN music while they surf, they certainly do not want to listen to YOUR choice.

Just forget this idea. Put a player on your site if you must that lets visitors CHOOSE to listen or not, but do not force it on them when they land on your site.

Hi Brian,

Probably the easiest way to add sound is with the HTML 5 audio element. The following article outlines how to do it:

http://html5doctor.com/native-audio-in-the-browser/

If you would like switchable audio then you might want to consider using Flash for now. There are a number of tutorials that explain how to set up a Flash jukebox on the web. Just search for Flash jukebox or Flash audio player.

I do agree with LadynRed though you should consider your visitor and what they would want. I imagine most users would prefer to press play by themselves.

I have to agree with LadynRed here, I find it so annoying when websites have sound coming on automatically. More often than not, I'm opening dozens of tabs at once, and when I get music blaring out of one it's a pain to find, and when I do, I close it.

You should let the viewer decide if they want sound playing or not. Don't force them to listen to something they don't want to.

I think it's an opinion you'll find amongst the majority of web users to be honest. It's why so many people hate MySpace. And it's why very few sites do it these days. You have to think of the end user, and try not to interfere with their browsing experience.

Yes, it's probably #1 or #2 consistently on the pet peeves list of what NOT to do on a web site, it doesn't matter how long it is.

It is. That's why we are telling you NOT to have a background noise that plays on startup.

Doesn't matter, ANY music, speech, stupid speaking "characters" etc that start on page load are annoying and intrusive.

It's kinda like the ads that say you just won a free ipod nano or ipad etc.. you just want to bash your screen, it's a bad idea to add music or audio to the background.

I find it very annoying, especially I always have 15 to 20 tabs opened in a browser and there is sudden music one of thoseand i need to search among the tabs for the culprit only to get closed.

Remember, music through background has no control bar so i wll not be able to pause even.

I have to agree with everyone else on here. Forced sound is intrusive as hell and I'd say the majority of web users close the page immediately (I know I do). I don't think anyone is being harsh on a "newbee". They are giving you solid advice.

One fact that I think is being overlooked though, unless I missed it while skimming through this thread, is what is this site? Are friends and family going there to view photos? Is it a commercial site? Does the site accomplish something else? Obviously if this is a personal site, it doesn't make a lot of difference. However, if the site needs repeat traffic, I would strongly suggest you forget about making someone listen to something no matter how short.

Just my two cents.

add a video to your site is better than a sound for intro

To maximise the probability of getting an answer, ask one short question at a time.

It would take me til the expiry time of the question to read it.
