Nope, you can't save changes on an excel sheet on a webpage, interactively that is.

OK all this nope that cant be done needs to stop.......
I did a quick google and apprently yes it can be done...check this out http://www.securesheet.com/

and this on that same site is where they talk about "Excel" spreadsheets http://www.securesheet.com/challenge_solution.html

I also find this http://aspalliance.com/36 which may help...since you can save excell spread sheets as XML data....

I wouldnt be surprised if MS Office 03 had something built into it to do just this aswell.....

Plus their is other ways im sure this could be accomplished....for isntance you could use an FTP program and post a excel sheet to it then have users download it modify it and upload it...

bottom line there is no such thing as "Can't be done"

Yeah, well that's with extra software. He only mentioned Excel, that of which there is no way using just that, that is that I am aware of.

True, but expand your horizons.

Not very browser friendly, especially where many people don't even know what FTP is.

My bottom line is that purely with excel, you can't modify the page interactively.

Why not use a database interface?

Sorry, don't mean to sound offensive CasaPages. I'm not trying to argue or pick a fight.

I'm gonna agree with CasaPages on this one... it probably can be done. I'm gonna go a step further and say you could do it without external software.
It will be possible to write an ASP Script (or maybe PHP) to interface with the Excel doc on the server and dynamicly create a UI to display and collect data from the user, and then write it back to the sheet. In fact, I think there's even ActiveX or COM objects that you can use server-side to do these things. Not sure how intensive they get though.

Yeah this link http://aspalliance.com/36 seemed to be heading in the right direction using windows native language of ASP...if I found all of that information in a 2 min google search it obviously can be done.......

and the fact that excel can read and create XML files makes me think even more that it is possible

the bottom line is it can be done

Just a link to more information on it

Creating an interactive web document

Alternately, you may save your workbook (single sheet only) in HTML format with "interactivity." When you open the HTML file in a compatible übrowser (IE 4.01 or later, not Netscape Navigator), you can interact with the Web page: enter data, recalculate formulas, update charts and pivot tables, and so on. Before you get too excited, however, realize that this feature has some serious limitations. Many common formatting options are not retained, and features like array formulas, macros, and outlining aren't supported.
taken from http://www.j-walk.com/ss/excel/usertips/tip016.htm

Now if you have been able to do this in simplistic form since earlier versions of Excel...and anybody that has a TV has seen MS ads for Office 2003 and how they boast about the whole virtual office thing....Im almost positive this can be done

Edit.....

I may dislike Microsoft some times but I must say their product knowledge bases are excellent....you might just find what you are looking for here

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/as...528401033.aspx

its the assitance section on Microsofts Excel 2003 site entitled Excel and the Web

yeah Im almost willing to bet money this can be done
