First of all, unless you have a perfect or very proffessional site, then you can get away with using buttons for a menu. The rest of the time, you always use text links. Make them stand out and have a simple continuous menu background, perhaps a liner gradient (vertical). There is no way, that I know of to make the text look like what you have and just appar on the buttons. Remember, the current fonts that show up properly are found in the font rop down of the post box.
You can use layers and CSS to put text onto an area without tables, however this can be time consuming. Using layers and CSS is endorsed by the W3C. And why not use a table, all you would have to do is slice the current image into smaller .gifs and then insert them into tables.
