text gets corrupted after uploading

I manage 2 different sites on 2 different web servers and have had the same problem occurring intermittently with both sites.

After I have made a simple change to a webpage (adding/changing a few words) and uploaded the page to the server via Dreamweaver MX2004 ftp, the text becomes randomly corrupted and does not display properly on the internet. The corruption does not necessarily happen anywhere near where I have made a change. eg. the word suite may look like scuite. When I look at the code (View/Source) I can see solitary symbols that look like letters and which are quite separate from the code - they appear anywhere in the white space. The weird thing is that when I open the page on the web server after uploading it the code appears to be okay so there is nothing I can change in an attempt to solve the problem.

I think it must have something to do with my home PC because this does not happen at work. At home I have a PentiumIII, use Windows XP Pro and have 256memory. At present I have to do all my changes at work and this can be inconvenient.

Anyone heard of this problem before?

maybe you are uploading in binary mode rather than ASCII or auto.

Hi Chris and thanks for your reply.

I checked the FTPExtensionMap.txt file and it seems for htm and html I am uploading in ASCII.

I am downloading the updater for DWMX2004 from Macromedia's site which they say -
< fixes in this update significantly improves connection and interoperability with different FTP servers>

Maybe that will do the trick.

I have still not found the reason why this problem is happening. I have just uploaded a web page after making a small addition of text (towards the bottom of the page) and as you will see the top part of the page has become corrupt. This file on both the local and remote sites shows no corruption whatsoever yet when I look at the source code on the internet it is screwed. When I try re-uploading it does not correct. Yet I bet if I upload the page again tomorrow it will upload properly.

The problem occurs randomly but frequently.

Does anyone understand why code on the page on the web server looks fine but does not on the internet??

What happened:
1. In the top left-hand corner the "> appeared.
2. The first paragraph lost its centre alignment and changed its font style.
3. The random noughts and square appeared.

This is a just-for-fun site that a friend and I made to teach ourselves how, but I need to understand why this corruption is occurring as I will be editing a new work site soon and cannot afford for this to happen then.

Thanks for any input.

where the image is for Inpatients_on_lawn.jpg the td tag has a space then the letter c then two more spaces and then it ends the td tag. Take out the c and the spaces. I don't know why but that might be causing it.

Thanks for taking the time to help out WebcyteDesign. I had missed the small 'c' which was on both local and remotes files. I have noticed these 'c's' before in files that do get corrupted and have no idea why they appear. I always edit carefully in code view.

I will leave the page as it is for a few days in case someone can recognise what is going on here. If not, I will re-upload the page minus the 'c' and see what result that has.

I downloaded the corrupt page from the internet and took a look at it in DW. What a mess it was. Amongst other things -

1. This was inserted:
<META content="MSHTML 6.00.2800.1498" name=GENERATOR>
2. <body> was changed to <TBODY>
3. All html elements were capitalised.
4. The reason the "> appears at the top left corner is because the code was changed to topMargin=)>"&gt;
5. Some of the style classes were within the <TBODY> element instead of the <head>.
6. Quotation marks were omitted from the html values.

These things do not appear in the source code of the page when viewing on the internet but they all got downloaded and were viewable in DW.

Man, what could be causing such gross corruption! As I said I don't have this happen at work.

Thanks again for pointing out the 'c'.

Okay. I tried uploading the same page with the 'c' in it using CuteFTP instead of DW and the page was even more distorted.

When I removed the 'c' and two spaces the uploaded the page it was perfect.

DW, so far, is generating corrupt code only on my home PC. The cause of the problem seems to be eluding everyone.
