Rather than creating a blog from scratch, you are much better off downloading WordPress or Plog.

Both will offer tons of features for free including a complete commenting system with multiple anti-spam scripts. I've used both and prefer WordPress. Check it out!

I should add, that both are completely customizable and free, and you can run them on any server with PHP, MySQL, Apache installed. Check out my site, which is using plog: http://www.dailymess.com.

I've been using it for a year, but like I said before, I prefer WordPress. Only because Plog's development team is very slow at coming up with new features, whereas WordPress is on top of the ball.

i have downloaded wordpress and plog. they use php as you know and i dont know any php what so ever. is there any other way i could get the comments buttons without using any php. also i have been looking for a free host with php and mysql without any ads where i can use my domain and i am having no luck at all. so if someone could help me out with a way to put the comments button on without php i would really appreciate it. A blog that is not using php that i know of is http://toobig.net . he has a comments button, but i cannot get in touch with him, does anyone know how he does it?

thanks

You can't. you need some server side code to process the input.

Similiar to WordPress and Plog, there's MovableType. TooBig.net is using MovableType to power his entire blog. Again, that is PHP even though the extension on the end isn't ".php".

Honestly your best bet is to download WordPress and install it on a server with PHP. If you know standard HTML, you'll have no problems customizing the way the site looks.

In my opinion, you get what you pay for. I'm sure there is a free hosting company out there that offers banner-free hosting with PHP and MySQL, but who knows how reliable they are?! Will they still be offering the free service this Thursday?

Over the past year I've slowly switched over many of my sites to this company because of their cheap hosting costs ($2.49/month) and features (PHP, MySQL, Perl, CGI-BIN, CPanel, 200mb space, 3 gig transfer, blah, blah, blah).

For my sites that require craploads of space and bandwidth, I have been using this place for the past 5 years. Unlimited everything for only $9.95/month.

Whichever hosting company YOU decide to use, you will need to login into your GoDaddy account and point your domain to the company's nameservers.

In regards to the second hosting company that philly offered above. I would check them out further ... they sound like they have a great package but I went through and looked at their current customers sites and they ALL loaded slow. They have a disclaimer there that says "Please keep in mind that some sites may have un-optimized graphics/database calls/etc. which may slow load times. " but all those sites dont have un-optimized graphics and such. I am a big guy on speed. ((haha guess that doesn't sound good)) I guess I mean that speed is important when it comes to surfing. If a site takes to long to load ... I am gone.

They all loaded very quick for me. I have been using them since 2002, and have never had a single problem.

Actually this guy I know, runs a very popular download site, and has been using phpwebhosting since 2000, with no complaints.
