Hi
How can we get the Icon in the browser url path? For example in WT you can see small icon( something like 3 people) just before the URL. How can we specify that?

It's basically an icon called favicon.ico placed in the root of your website..

Go to favicon.co.uk....you can make them for free there without having to download any special programs or anything.

They're simply a 16 pixel by 16 pixel gif that has been renamed to favicon.ico(note that it's NOT favicon.ico.gif) You can make your own using any program like fireworks, paint or adobe phototshop

Actually, an icon file is a completely different format than GIF files.

All you need is paint and 16 colours. For some reasons, the favicon does not always show, for example with all the computers that I have used IE on, it doesn't display. However, with Firefox it does. And no it isn't completely different. I create favicons as .gif then change the file extension to .ico.

It is different. An icon file is a collection of bitmaps, a GIF is an entirely different file format. Browsers may pick up re-named GIFs and use them as favicons, but if you try to use a re-named GIF as an icon for say, an application, you'll most likely get an error.

Try right-clicking a shortcut on your desktop and go to Properties, then click Change Icon. Browse for a re-named GIF and you'll get an error.

IE won't display favicons in the title bar, Firefox will. I think both browsers display the favicon in the favorites menu. If you get the MSN Toolbar for IE, IE will display the favicon in the tabs of it's tabbed browsing thingy.

It's ironic that the only browser to not abide to favicon standards is IE when microsoft invented the favicon.

Actually, if there is a 'standard' to favicons, then IE would be the only browser adhereing to it. As the name suggests, it's a FAVorites ICON, so should appear when you add it to your favorites. Other browsers simply extended the use of the icon to places such as the title bar.

IE dosn't add it to the favorites list though.. well it does, but very rarely and not without you having to clear the cache first.
I have 2 sites in my IE favorites that have a favicon next to them.
IE just dosn't like them.
