Layers vs. Frames & "Open Browser Window"

Hi, I have two questions. This is my first web page, please no laughing. I would really appreciate any help I can get. I'm quick to learn.

1. After saving my Photoshop files (with slices) and bringing them into Dreamweaver, by default the program sets them as frames. Then I wanted to add text, but I wasn't able to overlap, so I convereted the frames to layers which allowed me to add a new layer and add text. Now the problem I am facing is that the allignment of the next is inconsistent between different Browsers as well as how it is viewed in my Dreamweaver file.

My friend commented that layers are bad. Frames are good. I tried to convert back into frames, but now the program won't let me becuase of the overlapping layers thing.

What is the difference between layer and frames. Is one prefereable to the other and which should I use if adding text on top of an image?

2. I want a new browser window to open up when Contact is clicked, but I want the window size to be controllable. The only solution I have found is adding the behavior "open browser window." The only problem is, that when viewed, the hand (hot link) is not visible. It dosen't look like an active button in the browser. How do I change that?

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

Well, I figured out #2 in my question.

In order to ensure that that the hand is visible when viewing in a browser, the "#" which shows up by default, needs to be typed in under "link" in the property window. I accidently erased it. Oops.

But, I would still greatly appreciate help with Question #1.

thanks.

Wrong way around I'm afraid. It's frames that are not good for useability.

Thanks for responding.

I've been wrestling with my site all night. By now I have to agree with you. Layers are better with useability, however, I am still having issues with controlling their alignment.

Perhaps someone could take a look at my coding? Please?
