specify the width for the cells and they should remain in place.

But don't you also have to have some kind of data in the cell to prevent it from collapsing? Like a &nbsp; or a spacer.gif or something?

Isn't specifying a cell size best done using a css class element?

Still learning,

Grump, the cell only collapses if it is set to collapse in the CSS. The height and width as defined in the <td></td> tags keeps it in check.

Remember, tables are used to display tabular data. It was just the other week that I ridded myself of them and converted to divisions. It took me a whole day to understand (by trial and error) how the CSS and <div> work.

Grump, it doesn't matter where the formatting is, as long as the cell has it, or the browser will simply show it by default settings.

I have created a site in Dreamweaver and put in the cell dimensions and it works great in all browsers I have used. The problem is it doesn't work with Internet Explorer and that is the browser that will be used most when viewing the site. Any suggestions?

The bottom line is that tables are absolutely horrible for making layouts. Using this shortcut to lower the bar for learning will only set you back. There are beautiful things that can be done with divs and CSS that can never be done with tables. Don't start bad habits now!
