To start I have been using dreamweaver to create websites. My goal is to be able to use a search field and have it come up with a result page. I would imagine I need to you asp. I don't really know where to start. How do I make the results page and so forth. Maybe you could give me a quick rundown on search buttons or lead me to a self help page.

Example like this
http://www.naturehills.com/ type somthing in search such as Pin Oak. I want to do almost exactly what that page has.

Thanks

The easy way might be to use Google: http://www.google.com/searchcode.html Otherwise you need ASP or other scripting language and/or a database system to search.

if you're up for coding your own search then I think this might help. To be honest it's a little beyond my understanding

http://www.asp101.com/samples/db_paged_search.asp

There should be a few links under the search box (the sample one titled "Submit Query" not the sites actual search box) that gives you all the asp and html coding to do it, just leaving the part of putting the info into a database.

Hope this helps in some way.

you don't HAVE to use asp, theres also other languages such as PHP (my personal favourite because it's less confusing than asp, and also perl and cgi (also a messy language and not one I would recommend using). But yeah, look into some of these other languages before you jump into asp.

Chris
p.s. try searching hotscripts for a search script if you don't want to write it yourself

thanks for the replies.

I am checking out all the options.

I run a garden center and want for other employees to have somthing else to check before they ask me about plants and trees. The current computer they access is an old win 98 machine. Another site I asked on said maybe try php. Now on the win 98 machine are there any database addons that would have to be downloaded or installed.
