The problem is that i get different results as soon as I cut the css code and paste it in a new css document and then link it to the page. whats the deal? same code does not equal same result? the page looks slightly altered, div containers are shifted, etc.

I know there's a CSS hierarchy, which basically means it depends where you place the CSS code.

Styles applied within the body override styles applied in internal stylesheets.

Styles applied within internal stylesheets override styles applied in external stylesheets.

Maybe this is your problem?

Did you leave

<!-- and -->

in the document? I did that once and screwed things up. Comments inside a CSS file should use the format, /* comments here */ .

Can we see your code? Moving styles from the <head> area of a page to an external style sheet, should not cause a change in look and feel.

Reference your style sheet in EVERY html page (between you "<head></head>" tags) with the following code:

HTML Code:
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css">
Make sure you only change "style.css" to the name of your stylesheet, and remove any old style information you have left behind in your html pages.

Hope this helps
