www.w3schools.com is one of the best places for XHTML and CSS tutorials.
If you're going to start using something as flexible as CSS, why restrict yourself to a fixed widh layout?

Eric Meyer is a great css teacher. I got started reading a couple of his books. His site is http://www.meyerweb.com/ and he has links to many other sites.

I agree with Minaki though. Why limit yourself to fixed width design unless you have to.
