Question about Table and layout

I was curious about something. My sil who is a webdesigner told me that she makes one big table and then starts putting smaller tables inside of it to make her webpage. Like she will have one table for the header and one for the menu bar and etc. Is this a correct way to do this? I am building a webpage and haven't done it this way I have just made one table and then started building rows and columns in this and now seem to have a problem because some of my rows won't merge.

I dont' have it uploaded yet but I could send someone the code if anyone wants to look at it to see what the problem is.

Thanks

You can design a webpage with tables inside tables. This kind of design could be called a nested table layout. In the past, that is how most designers designed their pages. The trend now is to use CSS, but there are still many people who use nested tables. If you are having problems lining things up on your page, you might want to add another table. If you want me to take a look at the code, pm me and I will try to help.

You can do it either way, however neither are really 'correct' in terms of standards. Tables were meant to hold tabular data, not page layouts. Instead, it's in most cases best to use CSS to position your elements.

Using css will also generally make your site easier to manage and even download a little faster. Using css you tend to end up with less code overall creating smaller files and you can usually create smaller and less images when using a css layout

Using css inside of Dreamweaver will help get you started. Just make sure you look at the code Dreamweaver produces so you can get familiar with it. The basics are really as simple to learn as html.

Eric Meyer is a css authority and has several good books out that are fairly easy to understand. I'd recommend any and all of them.

His site is http://www.meyerweb.com

I have bought a book called " Cascading Style Sheets" by James Pence. It is a beginners guide. Do you know if this is a good book?

I don't know the book, but I looked it up at Amazon and most people seemed to think it was a good book, especially for beginnners.

And if you get stuck with anything feel free to ask here.
