i want to play a short wav in the onload event on my page and have it loop. i also need a 'stop' button but do not want to use the ms media player plugin with the <embed> tag.

I would use a free flash interface. there are several floating around. best to find them with a Google search for "free flash player".

Nothing will drive people to click away from your site than a blairing noise. Some people don't realize they have their speakers on, and they end up waking up the whole house. This is one of those nuisances that is akin to popups.
