Different sized screens

Hi

I have a web page that looks perfect on a XVGA (1024x768) screen. Everything fits on the screen. The problem is that when viewing these pages on a smaller screen (SVGA/VGA) I must scroll down to see the end part of the pages. I don't want to have to scroll down to see.

I've heard that it is possible for the pages to know on what size screen they are viewed on. They adjust to the size automaitcally or something like that. Is this possible?

Or do I just adjust the web page's size to a SVGA screen (800x600) size?

Thanks for the help!!

Well, a lot depends on your audience. Who are going to looking at your web pages? What do the majority of these people use as their screen size?

800x600 is considered to be the safest bet today. But, many people use 1024 x 768 and even higher...

See if you can do a little research first.. Give some people some phone calls and find out what your customers are using...

Remember, Most people don't mind scrolling up-down. This is natural. ust not left-right...

Thanks for the answer!
The customers are mostly firms of different sizes but individual people might also visit these pages occasionally.

When the index page opens the only thing that is left unseen is a little bar at the bottom of the page. This causes the scrolling and this is a question of only scrolling down about 1-2 cm. Not a lot. It is such a small amount that I'd want to fit everything on the screen and leave out the small amout of scrolling.

The 800x600 is good for now as I'm in a hurry with this case. How do I put this into the code?

you would be best to redesign the page to 800 by 600 - If you are looking for a code solution that presents a page based on the user's resolution, this will require multiple css stylesheets and is quite time consuming. Especially if you are not familiar with doing this.

Just a quick note. Firms don't look at your web site. Even if a firm is your target,
there are people in these firms that view your web site. You can take an hour on
an afternoon sometime and call and ask for the depratment that you would do
most of your business with. Ask the person who answers the phone what res
they set their computers on. In many cases a lot of people in the corporate world
never change these settings. Ask for the IT department and ask them the
average settings. They would be happy to helpk you out. call 4 or 5 companies
that may use your product, or your clients product, and get the info. This can go a
long way and bring your mind to ease..

Also call some of your current customers and ask them!

You may want to consider liquid design. Instead of entering fixed amounts (like px, or in) for your sized, try using percentages and em (em is the width of an 'm' in a line of text, so that the whole page is sized based on text size).

Liquid design, and the box model (google them) will make your web-page viewable in any resolution.

800x600 is still the standard monitor resolution, but keep in mind that PDA's and Cellphones are starting to become the newest web capable tools, and they have very small resolutions.
