Hello.

I made a webpage with frames. The main frame is 760px x 250px.
In that frame I insert a table with the same size so that a scrollbar is not nessecary. I make sure the content doesnīt make the table stretch.
Still I get scrollbars, both horizontal and vertical. Even if I make the table considerably smaller.
At one point (have no idea how) I managed to make them dissappear in IE, but they where still there in Mozilla Firefox and Netscape.

Can someone please give me a clue?

Best wishes
Ronny

Frames must die!

It's always better to post the code in question. It makes it easier for people trying to help to suggest a solution.
That said, you can try for instance:
Code:
<frame src="main.html" name="main" scrollbar="no" noresize>

Thank you That´s just what I needed.

I would like to use iFrame but I´ve heard that´s only supported by IE.

Best wishes

Not true Ronny, iframe is a supported element.

But what is your reason using (NEEDING?) iframe or frames?

Really not a very good idea. Do you want your pages to show up in the search engines? If not, you probably will eventually. Plus, framed pages cannot be bookmarked very easily.

Using frames for the sake of using frames isn't a good idea. (Using frames for just about ANY reason isn't a good idea.)

Take a tip from all of us who have been doing this for many, many years. DO NOT USE FRAMES!

ChipJohns is right.
An alternative to frames is to use php includes.. you don't need to know php to use it. Do a Google search and you'll find helpful information about how to use the php include() function. Here's an example (this is all you need to know):
Code:
<?php
include("menu.php");
?>

Thanks for your replies

First of all it turns out that my problem wasnīt solved after all as I want some of my pages to be scrollable (search results and such).

When thatīs said, the reason I want frames is mainly because of design. I would like parts of my page to be vissible at all times. My site is not online yet so Iīm posting a screanshot. If iFrame is my best alternative, where can I learn about it (from scratch)?

As you see, there is a vertical and a horizontal scrollbar. The horizontal must go
One should think that it would be the most basic thing to figure out but I just donīt see it

Best wishes
Ronny

Here are some references to iframe. htmlhelp - w3 - w3school

Iframe is not intended for page content like this. If you are persistent about this design, you are better off staying with frames..

Your content in the html page loading into that frame is bigger than the frame it is in. If you have a table on that page set to 100% or other amount this may make this happen. Decrease the size of the table. (it is usually best NOT to specify sizes for the content on the loaded page. Let the frameset determine the size..)

That loaded page is what you need to be looking at. If you can't get it, post the code..

How about a php include... and a scrolling div (overflow set to auto.) Pseudo-frame/iframe effect. I'm not sure if this would work with php. Never tried it.

Sound great if it works.
It would require a great deal of explaining though. Iīm not very experienced with php. Iīve been working with osCommerce and edited some allready made form scripts, thatīs it...

What did you do in the link you posted?

Are you referring to the scrolling divs (boxes) on the Apethumb pages?

I have created a small demonstration using php include and a scrolling div. Just so you know Ronny, not alot of people are big fans of the "scrolling div" but i find them to be very effecient. Link below takes you to the example. Both pages have a scrolling div that call on the same inc. file. This way, you can include the same content in multiple pages without having to change every page. Basically works like an i-frame or frames, but in my opinion, alot more reliable. I'm saying this based off an experience i had with frames in the past. BAD IDEA, THOSE FRAMES!

Hope this helps.

Thank you. That looks like it would work for me, and yes, I was reffering to
the Apethumb pages. Seams like something I would like

On my current project the content outside the scrolling area will not change.
Is it possible to make the scrollbar dissapear if the content does not owerflow the window/box? And would a dynamic scrollbar javascript work with this?

When the overflow is set to auto, it will only scroll according to the amount of content. When there isn't enough content to scroll, there will simply be no scrollbar. I have had problems with scrolling divs in Opera, but i haven't tried the newest version of Opera to see if anything has changed. As far as the javascript goes, i'm sure it will work just fine as long as it is on the page or has a link to it.

In my previous post i failed to mention that the php include will work within pages with the .php extension rather than the .html extension. I have been reading up on this, as i am considering incorporating this into my current project as well, and i have found a mixed opinion on whether or not php includes would hurt your search engine rankings. But, that's a whole other issue.

Good luck!
