Exactly right - there's in no way of stopping people, if someone wants to copy it they will.
You can make it harder for less experienced web users using a 'no-right-click' script, putting the image into Flash, or making it a background image with a transparent overlay - but with some knowledge you can still save a copy.
Remember, when you view a web page all the files are dowloaded to your computer images and all...
And then you have the classic Print Screen button... which kills any code you have in place because all you have to do is open, for example, MS Paint and paste it. Chrishirst is right.

You could link to your image, in a password protected zone, which would likely cancel out the image, but make only those with authorization able to view it, in theory.
The web is an open place. If you put something online then people can download it. You can sometimes do things to make it harder, but if it's there someone will find a way to get it.

There aren't any. Password protect your site by all means anyone with the password can see the images.
If the images appear in any browser they have already been downloaded
