Hi Everyone - I'm new here and I didn't know where to post this message, so I hope this is okay. I was hoping someone could help me out. If you visit my website at: www.ultimatedolly.co.uk It say's, Forbidden:

You don't have permission to access / on this server. This has been like this for four days now and I contacted my host but I haven't received a reply back. I really need to get my site up. I can access my "File Manager" and everything alse okay but I just can't view the site. I don't know much at all about this kind of thing, so I was hoping someone on this board could help me solve it. Is there anyone here who can? I would truly appreciate any help. Thanks, Paul

A Web server that is hosting live sites is configured to deny directory listings. However, it should be configured to automatically deliver a "default" Web page. This "default" page will be called something like index.html, index.htm, index.php, default.asp etc.
Have you created and uploaded such a page?

You could try explicitly referencing an uploaded file :

Hi Paul. Welcome to the forums.

Two things come to mind, both involve permissions.
1) Have you altered the allow/deny (sorry, I can't remember offhand exactly what that is) section in .htaccess?
2) Have you mis-set the permissions on either the folder or the index page?

There are probably other likely culprits. I'm certainly no expert in this area. But I'd check those two thinsg first.

ElectricSheep: if that was the case, shouldn't Paul be getting a 404 error? Or would you get the "forbidden" message if the server isn't set up to look for a default index page?

No, If there is no default doc and folder browsing is disallowed the server would send out a 403 Forbidden response. If folder browsing was allowed there would be a list of files and folders.

No default document was going to be my response as well BTW

Thanks Chris. I appreciate the reply. I'll have to add that to my mental notebook.

Thanks for all the replys. I haven't done anything to the site to make it go liek this. The last time I looked at my site it was great and then the next morning when I checked it, I noticed that message. I reallly don't know how to fix this and I don't really understand what you are saying... I'm new to all of this.

Can you give us the name of one of your Web pages ( including the file extension ) ?

For example :

myfile.php
anotherfile.pl
yetanotherfile.htm

I've just listed all the pages out in yahoo and they are all down. That prob means that its not to do with the index. I would say it is some thing to do with the host.
