 Hello Everybody
I was wondering about search engines (especially Google)
and the missing page "404" redirect...
First the facts:
Yahoo hosts my site and they provide me with an option to create a small html page for any missing pages.
As of now, my index page is ranked PR4.
I have about 2,000 pages within these directories and sub-directories (some of which are ranked PR3 - PR4) many of these pages are quite relevent (and directly linked) from and to my main index page and many are not.
The pages that are not directly linked to the index are still receiving a few serach engine hits each day and when I track them, they usually leaad back to my index page.
Now my questions:
If I were to nuke all these pages (except for a few that are linked directly from my main index) and rely on the missing page "404" redirect... would this effect my page rank with Google and other SE's?
Also, Would those nuked pages that are currently getting hits from keyword searches eventually be dropped from the SE's?
My next question is a little more complex:
Could I "find and replace" all the code (text, tags, ect) between the <head> and </Body> tags in multiple pages using some editor (like Dreamweaver) even if the pages are all vastly different from each other?
My last question is pretty basic:
Is it Ok to have 2,000 + pages in dir's and subs even if they are no longer useful to my main index?
