IE vs. Firefox display problems on inherited website

Hi Folks,

I'm having trouble seeing the problem.

I have a new account where I inherited a website that has had a few different developers over the last couple of years. The table, div, and style tags are so abundant that I'm sure they are "fighting" for hirearchy.

If you view the page in IE vs. Firefox, you will see right away how the IE display has the "content" table grown to much more than 600px width, which ends up repeating the bg image. The FF display isn't much better but it's livable for now.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I just want to get the display looking okay while I get to work on the shopping cart.

Thanks,
Morgan

I see what you mean and I think it's a good argument for not using tables and shows that table layouts have plenty of cross browsers issues as well as css layouts.

I'll be honest if it was me working on the site I would just go through the page and start cleaning up the code wherever I could to make it easier to see the table structure and also to remove anything that could be causing the problem.

It looks to me like it's the table cells toward the bottom that are causing the problem and I see that most of the cells have been given specific widths and colspans. My guess is it's one of those widths that's forcing things open and maybe even a cell or two that's set to span more columns than it should.

It looks to me like its the table cells with the 'Motorcylcels for Sale' image the cell below with the image of the two bikes and the cell above with the darker shade of blue. Those seem to be the ones forcing the cells above to become wider.

Yeah, I hate tables!

I've been looking at and playing with the source for hours. I'm not finding the problem.
