This is my first post but I need a good forum like this to get css help.

My question is does anyone know a tool that can tell you what style is used on your page. I have the IE DevToolBar and its very cool, but I`m having a problem with a design that has many styles, something is inheriting a style from somewhere so I`m trying to figure out where.

Any help would be great.

Simon

Get yourself a copy of Firefox. Then get the DOM inspector and the Web Developer toolbar extension. The web developer extension is usually all I use when troubleshooting.

I have firefox but use ie, I have the same dev bar on ie and use the dom inspector and like I said its good but it dosnt tell you what style a bit of text is using or rather if it has inherited a style (as far as I can tell anyway).

Its good for trouble shooting but I one of my styles is somehow inheriting a link style (I know because its orange and the only style that has orange) and there isnt even a link in the bit of text, really puzzling me, I can add a new style to over ride it but tying to find out why it has the style in the first place

Again, try the Web Developer extension for Firefox. There are MANY tools there that will show you what the hierarchy is.

If you'll post the code or a link it'll be easier to figure out what your problem is.

Simon. I use the same tools as LadynRed so I'll echo the vote for Firefox and the Web Developer extension. I use the DevToolBar in IE and while it's useful I think the extension for Firefox has more tools as do many other extensions.

The best tool though is the human brain. No tool is going to tell you everything. At some point you just need to figure out what's going on on your own. If it is an inheritence issue then look backwards from the element at all the containing elements right on up to the body tag.

Of course if you post the code or a link to the page here and the speicifc problem we'll be happy to take a look for you and see if we can't figure out what's going on.

Sometimes the best tool is experience.

It has the same tools (in terms of css) as I have both on both. I find the comment "sometimes the best tool is experience" very funny, its so obvious it had me in stitches.

I`m quite use to css and html as I`ve been a web designer for quite some time now, but that's not important.

I did fix the problem, I had a typo on a style so it inherited a link style even tho there wasnt a link anywhere near where I had the problem, strage, never seen that b 4. I was going to post a url and show css but I have signed a nda.
