Hi there i am haveing a problem with the positioning of my laver under dreamweaver it looks fine but in a browser it obviosly screws up. the reason is the the page is centered and the values for the layer are obviously diffrent in each browser. I was wandering if there is a better way of doing it. I'm sure css can help but i'm only just started with it.

Dont rely on Dreamweaver to show you how the site looks, its ok for general reference but most of the time will be different in browsers especially IE

Layers is a rookie option and should never be used. Stick with tables for alignment.

For the life of me I can't figure out why DW even included the layer option and some visual communication schools are ever teaching it to its students?

So yeah, learn how to use tables then read up on css.

Learn (X)HTML and CSS...

Tables can also be very confusing....nomen est omen...tables are for tabular data.

Try to learn positioning of Your web page elements with CSS

P.S. And don't forget to see how Your page looks in Mozilla, IE and Opera (PC users). Sometimes You'll see a lot of differences.

Tables are NOT the way to go. "Layers" are a Macromedia aberration for denoting CSS <div>s. If anything, tables are the 'rookie' option whereas anyone that is current and coding for the future should be using CSS.

In the Layer Tab (Right side), put a check against : Prevent Overlaps.
If still not solved then Go to > Modify > Convert > Tables to layers

Convert tables to layers... and you'll get 25 layers all absolutely positioned - very bad and a nightmare to clean up.

If you want to learn how to create liquid layouts, try reading these articles:
Float Layouts - css-discuss

For that you need this: Floatutorial: Step by step CSS float tutorial

Then there's the 'one true layout' : Introduction - In search of the One True Layout - not for the beginner I'm afraid.
