Hi All:

I'm trying to create an HTML program for a hobby project (Microsoft Flight Simulator). Basically, the program would allow the pilot to find the distance and heading (course, bearing in degrees) between to points, given the latitude and longitude of both places. The pilot would: (a) Select the From/To airports from two lists, or (b) Enter the airport identifiers for both airports. I have the latitude/longitude for all airports in consideration, and I have the formulas for calculating the distance and heading. What I don't have is enough HTML smarts to put it all together.

Anyone interested in helping with this goofy project, it would surely be appreciated....let me know and I'll provide more info.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Garry (garry@lewisaire.com)

This is beyond html, and you are going to require server-side technology.

Hi mgraphic:

Actually, no on both counts: (1) I already have another, similar flight calculator in html, so I know it can be done (I'm just not clever enough to do it, that's all). (2) Server side technology isn't required; it runs inside Flight Simulator on the PC.

Thanks for the feedback...

HTML cannot do calculations, it is a markup language, not a math program. If you have an html page or something that includes a calculator of some sort, it is more than likely using javascript.

Hi LadynRed:

It is an html page, and for sure it does calculations, so that's very possible. I didn't see any reference to Java, but perhaps I wouldn't know it if I saw it, eh?

Well, I guess I'm in the wrong place to be looking for help with this...maybe I can hack up the existing calculator with my own formulas, or something.

Thanks for the feedback.

Why dont you post a link up for the html page you allready have? Or, if it does in fact run inside flight simulator in some way or another as you say its probably using some kind of proprietary code or software in which case its probably best you take a look on the flight sims own site for code.

In any case the others have it right about it not being possible with pure HTML, its like expecting to find a login section on a daily newspaper.

Hi Beta:

Excellent idea, and thanks for your concern.

Okay, first off I'll apologize to those who were right about this. Secondly, you can see the program work at: http://www.lewisaire.com/fc.html

The gist of this is that it's a "virtual airline" (a hobby) using Flight Simulator...this program (the link) is a flight calculator that runs fine on the web, but that's not where we use it; normally it's downloaded to a member's PC and runs inside their Flight Sim. The one I'm trying to do would be similar in nature, functionally, but with different formulas, different inputs, etc.

Three...I dug a little deeper and --lo and behold-- Just as LadynRed suggested, I found some reference to Javascript, so apparently that's what it is. It opens as html in Word or Front Page, though, and I guess that's what threw me into thinking it done in html.

Four...Yes, Flight Sim does do the calculations I'm looking for, but not the way I want it done, hence this little project. PLUS...remember we're dealing with someone who thinks Javascript is html, so it's probably best that I don't try breaking that deeply into Flight Sim for their code. YIKES!

Anyway, there it is...and thanks again.

There are 363 lines of javascript code calculating the math - but your right, its not server-side script.
