I'm looking for a new CSS Editor. The only feature I really want is syntax highlighting. I've been using my academic copy of Dreamweaver, but it's so helpful that I feel like I'm forgetting things instead of reinforcing them. But I still want a little more hand holding than Notepad offers.
I need something that's free.
I'm starting to use Linux most of the time on my desktop so I want something that's available for both Linux and Windows.

So what do you guys use.

I'm all about the HomeSite pre-Macromedia buyout, but that's obsolete now so you won't be able to find it anymore.

I think Notepad++ does what you want.

TopStyle is, by far, and IMHO the BEST CSS editor out there. It has all kinds of options for color coding your code. It's also not limited to CSS, you can work on your HTML files and it is NOT a WYSIWYG thing, you code by hand and you can see your results immediately in the preview screen. You can set the level of CSS you want to use up to 2.1 and you'll get warnings if the selector you use is not in the CSS spec you chose to use. This is what I use 99% of the time and I think its a fantastic program.

If your on a MAC Xyle Scope is pretty cool. Will break down a live site. Otherwise I use Dreamweaver.

If I am doing a merge I use Text Wrangler once again for MAC.

I use HTML Kit for all my coding now. What I like about it most is the FTP support that allows for real time editing of files directly on the server.

All the editors mentioned so far are good. For me as long as it has syntax highlighting anf FTP support it's fine.
