Hate to say it but Moofasa isn't too far off the mark - Yahoo uses a lot of advanced coding methods and it would be quite a challenge to match its functionality, especially if you're just getting started. I certainly wouldn't try tackling such a challenge!
I think you can mimic some of the things you're describing (dynamic content without changing the page, etc), using JSP, so maybe that should be your first step.
Have you considered using a content management software? I use DotNetNuke which is open-source and has a lot of useful modules right out of the box, not to mention an array of add-ons through 3rd parties. It might not look or act exactly like yahoo's home page, but I'm sure I could make a site that has SOME of the same functions as it, using DNN and maybe some creative coding.
