.... a good cgi script that will take the data from a web form and

(a) check it for required fields (and ideally cross check for mistakes in email address)
(b) write it to a mysql database
(c) and send a copy by email to a number of addressees?

Need something that a dumb critter like me can handle, and that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

do you already have the form? and yes there has been several scripts going around the php forum I know I've posted a few (here too infact) just search for posts dealing with "email" or "form handling" and you'll find several for the email portion of what you're looking for but the mysql entry wouldn't be hard to do as well

Here's probably the most used CGI form processing script which does all you ask except the MySQL database. http://www.scriptarchive.com/formmail.html , quite strange there's no modification for MySQL, I know there's bFormMail which does flatfile databases, which would be a good idea to check that out, so that you could easily, or someone else could easily change it so that it's stored in MySQL instead of just a flatfile.

Cheers,

MC

Thanks, folks. I have found one that does everything I need, so am posting the answer here. Its a php script called phorm. I shall need to brush up on my php and it will be painful getting the thing configured, but it does it all, and its free!

BTW, have been warned away from formmail because of security problems. I don't know what I'm talking about, but the guy who warned me seemed to, so I'm passing it on.

Every script may pose security problems, a well used script like formmail would most definitely have more security issues found than scripts that don't have the larger audience but the issues are usually addressed as soon as the problems get discovered and are known to the developer.

Phorm is no different, based on cgiemail, sometimes converting CGI to PHP doesn't make sense other than the developer doesn't need the start from scratch and can base it off cgiemail.

But if you're happy with Phorm, then good luck, seems the developer has been too busy for over a year now and their release of Phorm v4 has been set back. If there has been problems with it since, I don't know if any of them have been addressed, you should check this out and make sure that the development hasn't gone stale, otherwise you may consider changing the script to one that can be maintained.

Cheers,

MC
