I run a photo web site ( http://LandscapePhoto.us ), and I use a drop-shadow frame around the images. I'd been using the same color as the page background in the jpeg files, which created a nightmare when I changed background colors. Also, posting the photos on photography forums, I get a little bit of color around the image itself that looks bad out of context.

So it sounds like PNG transparency is perfect. Except that most people still use IE 6. Trouble is, I don't; I let Windows Update push me up to 7. I know PNG transparency doesn't always work properly in 6 ... I think this is a pretty simple case, but I'm not sure.

Any thoughts on the matter? If anyone out there could let me know if the image sits over the background properly in IE 6, or has any advice on how I can test this, or what the rules are?

Thanks!

The very elegant way is - CSS! But, first, You'll need to know it. It is not hard to learn.

Find on google something like "drop shadow in CSS" or similar...

Thanks for the reply. Actually I know how to use CSS, but when I use an image in a post on another site ( say, photo.net ), I'm not always able to use it. So it makes sense for the shadow to be part of the image, if I it'll work in IE 6.

You will have to use a bit of javascript to make IE 6 and below render PNG images properly. Check out this article:

The 1st problem was being "forced" to upgrade to MicroSTOOPID IE7...

As for using CSS to fix the png problem, I suggest you go here

Why not use .GIF transparent images. They work fine in all versions of IE. Even though you should use FireFox

Although the picture may look ok, but gif has a hard time with shadows, the shadows will look more like layers of different color gray.

Most png's work with IE6. Don't worry about it.
No, they do not. IE 6 and below does NOT SUPPORT png transparency - period !

most people viewing your page will be using Firefox or IE7,
Are you kidding me ? Show me the STATS where you got that ??? Yes, MS pushed out IE 7 as a crictical update, but not every computer user uses automatic updates and some users just don't allow MS to run amok on their computers blindly letting it install all kinds of crap.

At work everything has it be IE 6 proof before it goes out the door. One of my computers still runs 6, although the other one updated itself a couple of weeks ago. It's still more prevalent than I'd like.

My web host breaks down stats by browser type ( shockingly, 30 % of my visitors use FF ), but not version. So most people just show up as IE. I'm going to have to comb through the raw logs, but have been putting it off ... in the end, I still know I need to make stuff work in IE 6.

Yah.. I have to make sure everything works in IE 6 too. We are stuck company-wide on IE 6 and there's no telling how long it'll take them to upgrade. They're still upgrading some locations to Win XP !!

We have IE 7 installed on a sandbox machine that we can remote into and test with.
