You've used position: absolute for practically everything.. not the best idea, it can cause a lot of problems.

You are going to have to give your menus a MUCH higher z-index than 1 to get the menus 'above' the rest of your page elements.

Im pretty new to web design, how should i have positioned these as dreamweaver has set them to absolute? I have tried making the menus z index higher but it still has the same problem.

That's the downfall of letting DW write your code - it's BAD.

You do not need to position anything, except MAYBE your dropdown menu elements, some methods require at least the menu container be absolutely positioned to work.

For the rest, use the normal document flow and learn to use floats, you will be glad you did: http://css-discuss.incutio.com/?page=CssLayouts
