Hey,
Im making a site for a client and we've hit a dead end one one thing i particular

The whole site we've made is HTML and Images only. The only flash element is the Navigation bar at the top. With out making 2 dedicated flash/non flash sites,
how do we make it so that if flash is not detected on the viewers computer then the flash navigation will not show, but instead show a java script rollover nav bar?

I was thinking maybe have the flash nav in a div that floats over the image nav, and if flash is not detected it would disappear...?

help would be super appreciated.

If you're going to bury your Navigation in FLASH, then you MUST provide a TEXT version of the navigation on the page somewhere.

You would have to script it. If you're using flash detection, rather than displaying the 'get flash player' option, you'd have it display the text menu.

SIFR does something like that, you might want to check it out:

I don't know how you could detect flash, but if you put each navigation structure in a div, set one to display:block and the other to display:none, then you can use document.getElementById to reverse which div is showing.

Personally, with menus, I never use Flash or Java, I just prefer to use either GIF/PNG buttons or text. The end user needs to be able to navigate simply, or they'll just surf away. I want them to actually get to where I'm pointing them to, but that's me.

Blessings!

You can use something like the UFO script designed by Bobby van der Sluis (found here: http://www.bobbyvandersluis.com/ufo/).

It works in the following manner:

Detects if the viewer has the correct version of flash
(a) if he does, then displays the flash movie
(b) if he doesn''t then displays a specified text field

simply change the text field to a textual based nav. menu and you're all set.
i haven't tried to use images in place of text in this regard, but you can experiment...
