Hi Everyone!

I'm a newbie designer and just discovered how to use Fav Icons (favicon.ico). I want to use one on my website, but am having a problem.

My website is located on some free server space at my Internet provider (e.g. members.upc.pl/ahmik). I have a domain registered (e.g. www.ahmik.com) that redirects to that space on my Internet provider. The favicon.ico does not display when I type in www.ahmik.com....it does work when I type in the other domain.

Is there a way I can get the Fav Icon to display when someone types in the www.ahmik.com URL?

Add the link to favicon.ico to the head of your index page on http://www.ahmik.com/ ?

Code:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://searchportal.information.com/favicon/mi_favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">
Not sure if it'll work, but give it a try.

don't you usually put your favicon.ico in your root?

Usually, but not always. It can be anywhere you'd like, and it can be named anything you'd like - it can even be an animated gif.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I understand how to get the favicon to display, but it does not display due to the setup I have...here it is:

I have my website on some server space I receive from my Internet provider. The path is nothing interesting (e.g. members.chello.pl/john.doe/index.htm)...If I type that exact address in, the favicon does appear.

HOWEVER, I have a domain registered (e.g. www.ahmik.com). I did not buy domain hosting from the domain registration website (www.nazwa.pl)...I have a setup where people who type in www.ahmik.com get redirected to that other website (members.chello.pl/john.doe/index.htm). When the redirect occurs, the www.ahmik.com stays in the address bar, but the favicon does not show up.

Is this clear now? The answer would be to buy server space from the domain registration company...but I don't want to!

Why don't you try contacting your ISP and ask if they're willing to host your domain on their nameservers, pointing to your free webspace?

Seems like a lot of trouble for a favicon though. However, referring to your other post, it would solve that problem too.

It does seem like a bit of trouble but it looks very professional to have one. If I can't pull this off with the set-up I have I'll forget about it.
