I have being learning (x)html and css for a couple of months now, and am going to get some new books to help me advance more in css.
I’m just wondering what other skills should I begin to learn that are worth learning javascript, PHP etc ?
Thanks for any help.

I would have to say start with a basic PHP book (or whatever language you prefer). PHP is fairly easy to pick up.

I honestly know very little javascript. Any javascript I ever needed was found through a search engine. I'm not saying it is something you shouldn't learn. I just never ran into many cases where I needed to write my own scripts. PHP handles most things for me in place of javascript.

I would say a basic understanding of javascript is a must. Then learn a little dom scripting. I've been learning javascript for about 7 months. I got to a point by which I can read all javascript code. This helps me a lot.

You can also go down the road of flash and action script. I'm always using flash and action script.

Then there is server script. eg php etc. I know the basics. Also datastorage(my sql etc)

If you didn't know. The Javascript, actionscript and php language have much in common. so learning one will help you with all three.

There is also ajax and ruby on rails. I'm still trying to get my head around these.

....oh yeah.I learnt about microformats the otherday.

...I can't think of anymore.

It depends on what you want to do... if you want to change text fields, colors, and messages dynamically then you should learn javascript.

If you are interested in creating web applications, creating a CMS, or some other dynamic content website you should learn PHP or ASP.

The web is your oyster and each programming language have their pluses and minuses...

Hey guys, cheers for the replies

I think the best way to go then is learning JavaScript from the internet and then PHP and mysql from a book.
Are there any books that any one can recommend that they know are good in either CSS or PHP.
Im thinking of getting:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pro-CSS-Tech...e=UTF8&s=books

and

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Professional...e=UTF8&s=books

any others?

i also like your web site jason_bristol, nice look to it

Cheers

I've learnt most of my css from internet sources. The only book that I have ever bought on css was called.

"CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions"

This was a really good Chrismas present from Santa this chrismas gone.

I hope you don't mind me putting my own question in here. I'm looking for a javaScript book. I've been learning for several months so i'm looking for an intermediate level. Can anyone recommend one? And also a beginner's level for PHP as I only know the basics for PHP.

Jason, you might think twice about learning PHP and JavaScript from a book. If you like to be able to sit back away from the computer while still learning to use one, then ignore me, but if you'd like to use your $100 on something else, well, the web has VASTLY more information on these topics than a book does.

And it's really useful to make some code changes, hit refresh, and watch their effect, so even with a paper book that will have you sitting by the computer. If you're going to be there anyway, you might as well be reading from the screen. Finally, as new ideas and technologies pop up, books fall out of date, but web pages (hopefully) get updated.

Sounds like you want to learn everything at once -- this will tend to confuse you ... suggest you learn one thing at a time, until you are very proficient and understand what you're doing with it.

Books? Meh -- I agree with others; forget the books and learn thru online Tutorials as it's much faster ... just Google for whatever tutorial you'd like to study.
