Hi, I have just changed over from one provider(geocities) to another using the same domain name, but with a couple pages from the old provider that I would like to direct to my new page. Mainly because of my google ranking and when you do a search for my products, the old page comes up and when you click on it of course it has Page Not Found. What codes do I use to make the old page transfer immediatly to the new page? Thanks

I can only think of a timed redirect that may work. Other than that I am drawing blanks....

<head>
<meta HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" Content="0; URL=www.yourwebpage.com/yourpage.html">

<title ID=titletext>Your Website</title>
</head>

Tammy if you still have the same domain then all you would need to do is have those same pages in the new location and everything would be fine.

Could you give an example of a page that isn't being found now?

If by domain you mean your site was located at yourdomain.geocities.com and now it's at yourdomain.newprovider.com then you aren't really using the same domain and you would still need to be in control of the pages at geocities to add a redirect.

If you can give an example of an old page and a new page I'm sure someone could let you know how to do the redirect.

I don't know if the search engines would recognize that, although the users definitely would. You could also use JavaScript, which the engines definitely won't get.

What type of hosting do you have now? They may have an option for redirects, or, if not, you could probably use your .htaccess file and mod_rewrite, but this is a nightmare.

A 301 redirect is the only search engine friendly redirect

You will need a server side language available on geicities. Such as: PHP ASP .htaccess etc.

If your domain name is a real domain name (not a subdomain). Your site will not need to be redirected.

Subdomain = subdomain.geocities.com
Domain = geocities.com

302 isn't a permanent redirect...it's a temporary redirect.

Geocities will exist as long as 15-year-old kids running e-wrestling sites and white trash single moms in the South/members of a dozen MLM programs have something to say about it. Admit it though...you used it once. Go on.

As far as old page vs. new page, you seem to be confusing concepts. If you had a site on Geocities with a domain name, you were likely frame forwarding the domain name. Geocities never did (to the best of my knowledge) allow for domain hosting.

If that's the case, the best thing you can do is get some fresh inbound links to your domain so that big G can see it on the new host and crawl the new pages (eventually).

Erm, I used Geocities once in the '90s, but I didn't inhale?

They had this horrible "page builder" web app, on dialup, so I turned around, and didn't have more than an internet email address for a few years after that.

if you don't have access to .htaccess you can use methods mentioned here in step by step and sample code:
Redirect visitors to your new site
