what's the code for opening a new window in FF? I've tried "_new" and "_blank" and neither work. Can't seem to find a quick fix on the web either. Anyone know the code off the top of their head?

The _blank target name is what should be used to open new windows

6.16 Frame target names
Quote:
_blank
The user agent should load the designated document in a new, unnamed window.

Takin' in the view from the outside. Feeling like the underdog. Watching through the window I'm on the outside. Living like the underdog.

firefox can be set to not open new windows.
it has an option to open new windows as tabs.
if that option is on "_blank" will open a tab.
if that option is off "_blank" will open a new process of FF.
what exactly happens when you use _blank or _new?

Ah, that's it, then. I have FF set to open new windows in new tabs and that's what's been happening when I test my code. When a friend first introduced me to FF I fell instantly in love and never used EI again. ^_^

I totally forgot about that ... I've been using FF for so long that the "open in new tab" is quite normal.

Ok, the question then is, WHY are you opening new windows ?? That tactic really is rather rude and people just don't like windows opening in their faces w/o warning.

Popup windows can be useful if used correctly. You don't want to use them all over the place or to open external links just so you can keep your site up.

But for example, I use them to open help files on our sites. They are made with a defined but flexible size and they open up in a new window so people can look at the online help while working on the web application at the same time. It's not very efficient if help pages are opened in the same window when you are halfway through an online form and then return to back to the form with the form reset so you have to fill everything in again.

Check out how the help windows opens up on Dell's site when you're configurating a system.

In that instance, JT, a pop-up window is at least feasible, but you should tell your visitors on the page that a new window is coming so there won't be any confusion. I use new windows to open PDF documents on our intranet for the same reasons as you, but I warn them they'll get a new window.

I'm using it to open up a password box.
