Hi,

I am re-designing my site and wondered :

How to disable the size of text changing on screens? I know people have it normal, small, larger, largest etc - I seen on another site that no matter what size u click the text always stays the default size, how do I do this?

I look forward to any replies

I think this is an issue of javascript, I've never heard of that in HTML, try posting it in the Javascript forums, other than that I have no idea what you could do.

One question would be: Why would you want to do that, lots of people have to make text bigger to read it, like some of my sites, i showed to my dad, and he couldn't read the text as it was because i had used size 12 font (looked great, but i guess it wasn't the best for everybody)

You can't, and there's a reason for that...accessibility.

Browsers such as Firefox will automatically resize the text regardless of what it as set at (even if you set it in terms of px or pt, which IE will keep the same regardless). As ThatBanditKP pointed out, some people need to resize the text and a good design will give them the right to do so.

The text does resize in Firefox. I just tried it out. It doesn't resize in Internet explorer because the site you gave us uses px to define the font sizes. Like Adam said, Internet Explorer wont resize the text if it is set in px or pt. But other browsers will resize the text no matter what.

No...you cannot. You're looking at it in IE (likely IE6).

Look at it in Firefox. The text size will change, regardless of what the font size is set to. Any browser other than IE has the same property, again for reasons of accessibility.

I think the important question in this thread went unanswered: Why would you want to hinder the text accessibility in the website you are designing? I'm only asking because this might be a good time for some education on why it's not the best practice to do so when designing a website. Along with that question my next question would be: What problem(s) will arise (if any) when the text size on this website is increased?

I think the main reason is to keep the layout from breaking when the text is larger than the default size. I too was hoping to be able to disable the font resizing on certain sites where the target audience is most likely not going to be impaired...

I don't know if it is possible or not but the truth is that if you have to disable resizing text then your design is not very good. Some people might have to enlarge the text to be able to read it. There's probably many other reasons why one would want to enlarge/shrink text. Webdesign is not only about making websites look good. You also have to deal with issues like this.

MusicMan: I am fully aware of what can happen when text is resized. My question was to get specifics as to be able to help him with an alternative so the site doesn't break apart when the text is resized.

niklasber: I wouldn't go as far as to say that the design isn't good. Especially since none of us have seen it. I would say that yes, a good designer will design a site for accessibility, but there are many factors other than poor design that entice a designer to want to lock the text size in a site down.
