Heyas,

This is going to be hard to explain, but anyway, I have this problem that everytime I have a table inside a <div>, it makes the division really huge, much bigger than it needs to be.

For example putting the google search bar on my site, I pasted the code into a div, but it makes the div really big and I can't make it smaller.. EG it only needs to be about 30px high, but it refuses to go smaller than 100 px.

It's like the table has a massive invisible border I can't get rid of, even though I set the border and everything to 0.

Please help, its really screwing up my already small web design skills,
thanks!

Luke are you referring to the site you linked to? I'm not really seeing anything wrong in the way the Google search at the top of the page looks.

The search table has two rows and the one with the search box and the submit button are about 30px and the row underneath where you choose to search Google or your site looks about the same height. I'm not seeing the div any bigger than the combination of those two rows.

Am I missing something? Is it a different site?

The table cells do have heights specified in them so that could be what's forcing things to be bigger. Also you might want to look into the margins and paddings of the various elements. Google's table also is a form so you need to look at the div, table, form, and the rows and cells of the table and the form elements.

Could you let me know if I was looking at the right site and search form? Maybe post some code. I'll be happy to take another look. What I see now though looks like what I would expect to see of a Google search form.

Also Google is pretty strict on what you can and can't do to code they let you use. Generally you can't change it at all, though sometimes you can make a few modifications here and there.

VanGogh thanks for the reply man, sorry I wasn't online the last days.. Actually the new design I did for my site turned out to be a disaster, so I had to go back to the old one while I think of what to do, and this table thing became the least of my problems. oh well, life is difficult.. !

It's all a learning process. Don't hesitate to post again if you have a question about the new design.
