Hi

The new version of internet explorer now opens new tabs much like firefox has done for ages (& some other browsers). This prompts me to wonder how I can get an external link to open a new tab?

I am used to target="blank" to prompt for a new window but wonder if HTML now incorporates a way to open a new tab?

I hope someone knows. Thanks

There isn't a way. The target="_blank" attribute will open in a new (whatever the user decides, tab or new window).

Some of us have actaully disabled tabbed browsing because we find it annoying as well.

Oh ok. I guess I have used browsers like firefox & opera for so long I am used to the tabs & like the fact that it frees up my PC taskbar for other application windows.

I have always used target blank for external hyperlinks from customers sites & my own sites so that the current site (customers site if thats what it is) remains open & obviously it works fine. I guess I just wondered now tabbed browsing had moved to IE if HTMl code would incorporate a way of working within this window to open new windows.

Tabbed browsing is one of my favorite features, I love it. Why would you disable this?

I love tabbed browsing , but where and how new windows open is really up to the user's preferences. I have my FF set to open new windows in a new tab by default.

If you're going with XHTML though, the target attribute is deprecated and will cause validation errors.

Yea have to keep in mind that a lot of people have configured their tabbed browsing (since Firefox has had it for quite some time and now IE has jumped on it) some of the new spyware/antispam/antivirus software packages that have come out also have a feature that automatically disables that if not configured by the user.

I use an Alt+tab to scroll through tabs, you have to click twice? My tabs are single click open, maybe I misunderstand.
