When developing your website, it is important to follow as many standards as possible. Websites have been sued in the past (Target) because of their lack of accessibility. Screen readers is another reason to make accessible websites, besides the other obvious reasons. This is one lesser known subjects.
The best way to make a website accessible for a screen reader is to view your website with all style sheets and images disabled. If you can still navigate your website easily, and if your still able to get your message across then your good!
There are many ways to do this. Use title tags, alt attributes, the abbreviation tag
Code:
<abbr title="Michigan">MI</abbr>
so that the screen reader will know how to properly pronounce the word.
This is my website without any styles or images:

As you can read, the site is still very accessible.
Now why should you care?
A search engine is just like a screen reader. It does not interpret images and style, all it does is read the plain text from your website. The more text you can give it to understand and explain your site the better.
I recommend reading up on image replacement techniques.
Hope you found this informative
